Tim Goullet has over 35 years experience in the fields of Osteopathy and exercise science and is an expert in both body STRUCTURE and BIOMECHANICS. This combined expertise enables him to discover and successfully treat the root causes of pain and injury. FULL BIO - TIM GOULLET

Tim Goullet graduated from the University of Surrey with a degree in Sports Science in 1987 and worked as a fitness trainer for several years at the renowned Champneys health club in London.

Tim gained valuable experience working one to one with a variety of body types and fitness levels which nurtured a desire to understand more about the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the body.

In 1993, he graduated from the British College of Naturopathy and Osteopathy after completing 4 years full time training.

Over the next 25 years, Tim practiced in a variety of settings including private clinics, health clubs and yoga studios in London (Chelsea/Marylebone/Primrose Hill) and Surrey locations.

During this time he also lectured in osteopathic technique at his old college, taught sports massage and anatomy at the Clare Maxwell-Hudson School of Massage and taught anatomy on yoga teacher training courses.

In 2005 Tim completed a post graduate course of study in Classical Osteopathy under John Wernham, himself a long time student of J.M.Littlejohn.

Away from academic life, Tim has trained in Karate Jutsu for over 35 years reaching the level of 6th Dan Black Belt in 2019. He has taught the martial art to both adults and children and run clubs in London, Surrey and Kent.

Soon after qualifying as an Osteopath, Tim also began practising Ashtanga Yoga in London and abroad under a wide variety of teachers, all with a unique but complimentary approach. This experience enriched his understanding of the scope of human movement and the dynamics  and importance of breathing.

During his trips abroad, Tim also qualified in Traditional Thai Massage (both Northern and Southern styles), learned basic level Shiatsu and Acupressure plus also gained experience in the massage systems of India and Indonesia.

Through the intense practice of both yoga and karate, Tim has developed a deep understanding of human movement from an experiential perspective which perfectly complements the knowledge gained from his academic studies and osteopathic practice.

Through this combination of academic and practical experience Tim has created his own unique approach to resolving pain, improving health and transforming posture.

Equipoise Physical Therapy emphasises the importance of integrating the body's STRUCTURE and POSTURE with BREATHNG and MOVEMENT. As they all affect each other, they  are all considered important parts of EPT assessment and treatment protocols. This broader approach enables a more thorough analysis of every case and leads to more sustainable, longer term resolutions to even the most stubborn and chronic conditions. Equipoise Physical Therapy treatment modalities include classical osteopathy, mat work (using an electric mix of bodywork styles from around the world) and postural exercise therapy. The original aim being to REALIGN AND REJUVENATE the body and treat the root causes of disease and dysfunction. Addressing the nuances of each individual patient is prioritised over a simply treating the condition in a one size fits all approach. Improving blood flow, organ health and HOMEOSTASIS  are the intended goals of treatment, not just simply the removal of pain.

Treatments are typically longer than average (40 mins) to allow for a more in depth approach.

The term "EQUIPOISE" refers to the structural balance or EQUILIBRIUM displayed by a body while upright.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY is the common denominator connecting the basic functions of posture, breathing and movement.

Conversely, like a reversible reaction, the quality of our posture, breathing and movement ultimately affects our STRUCTURAL MATRIX - our human SHAPE (structure) is continually REMODELLING itself in response to how we sit/stand, breathe and move.

  • STRUCTURE
  • POSTURE
  • BREATHING
  • MOVEMENT

These 4 variables are interdependent and must be considered simultaneously within an integrated systems approach to body analysis and treatment.

Loss of good spinal alignment is the root cause of most physical problems, from back and neck pain to injuries affecting the limbs. Recurring injuries and chronic conditions persist when the spine is not properly aligned and imbalances are left uncorrected. Many of them originate during our childhood yet frequently go completely undetected as the root cause of current  problems. Spinal misalignments inevitably disturb the symmetry of the pelvic and shoulder girdles and consequently affect the limbs.

The natural equipoise we were born with can be easily lost along our life’s journey without us even noticing it.

The upright posture of humans can, and should be, an elegant sight. However, most attempts at creating perfect posture fail simply because  they consider posture as an isolated entity.

Efficient upright posture depends upon the quality of our foundational STRUCTURE and BREATHING mechanics.

The upright posture of humans can, and should be, an elegant sight. However, most attempts at creating perfect posture fail simply because  they consider posture as an isolated entity.

Efficient upright posture depends upon the quality of our foundational STRUCTURE and BREATHING mechanics.

Injuries and imbalances embedded in our structure are bound to have repercussions on our posture, which will only improve if the causative structural issues are resolved. If structural and postural problems become entrenched they go on to affect the way we move and even the way we breathe.

Sadly, the posture of adults and children is one of the most neglected and poorly understood elements within the modern healthcare system.

The WAY we breathe has a profound effect on our shape and posture. Good RIB CAGE EXPANSION helps to keep the lungs healthy and our posture lengthened and lifted.

A  degree of TAUTNESS IN THE ABDOMINAL MUSCLES is also important to empower the expansion of the rib cage - the abdominal  and thoracic cavities share inversely proportional pressure and volume ratios. When the thoracic spine and rib cage become stiff from years of bad posture, the abdominal phase of breathing  becomes overly dominant at the expense of thoracic breathing. This usually results in reduced abdominal muscle tone due to accompanying degrees of distention.

The WAY we BREATHE affects our SHAPE, for better, for worse.

The WAY we MOVE literally SHAPES US. This includes how we exercise. Not just WHAT exercises we do but the WAY we do them. For example, HOW we do a press up or HOW we stretch could be causative factors in excessive rounding of the spine or an increasing forward head posture.

The WAY we MOVE literally SHAPES US. This includes how we exercise. Not just WHAT exercises we do but the WAY we do them. For example, HOW we do a press up or HOW we stretch could be causative factors in excessive rounding of the spine or an increasing forward head posture.

GOOD FORM and TECHNIQUE in exercise can enhance your posture. Bad form and technique can ruin it, especially when those same exercises are badly performed on a regular basis. Continued exercising with poor posture will only engrain these aberrant patterns more deeply, perpetuating an ongoing vicious circle.

FORM and FUNCTION are inextricably linked.
